| dc.description.abstract | Song evolution and revolution events recorded throughtime are typical cultural features for humpback whale(Megaptera novaeangliae) populations worldwide. However,it is unknown if song dynamics are equivalent among sub-populations or breeding stocks of the South Pacific Ocean. To contribute to the understanding of the temporal songdynamics of humpback whale song off the coast ofEcuador, we analyzed acoustic richness and repertoire com-position based on unit, phrase, and song composition overconsecutive breeding seasons from 2012 to 2019. Weobserved incomplete song revolutions (all themes were rep-laced except one) and a nonsignificant variation in theacoustic richness during the study period. Our results showthat over the years, humpback whale singers incorporateacoustic material from different subpopulations such asCentral South Pacific (French Polynesia) and western SouthAtlantic (Brazil) into their song repertoire. The temporalacoustic contact of different subpopulations migratingthrough the eastern South Pacific may be reflected in theirparticular acoustic richness and temporal evolution. Off thecoast of Ecuador, humpback whale song patterns pointtowards an alternative scenario of song evolution, indicatinghow cultural transmission among subpopulations can alterthe song patterns in specific breeding grounds due lack ofgeographical barriers surrounding the southeastern Pacificregion. | |
